Using a blend of sweet and tart apples cooked with their fiber-rich peels, this recipe is naturally sweetened with pure maple syrup and infused with warm cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice. It is a nutritious, hands-free snack or side dish that makes your home smell incredible as it simmers to perfection.
Instructions
- 1
Core the apples (3 lb) and cut them into 1.5-inch chunks. Leave the skins on for extra nutrients. Place them into a slow cooker.
- 2
Add the maple syrup (0.25 cup), cinnamon stick (1), and pumpkin pie spice (0.5 tsp). Use a vegetable peeler to remove a strip of peel from the lemon (1) and add it to the pot.
- 3
Cover and cook on low for 360 minutes (or on high for 150 minutes) until the apples have completely broken down. Stir occasionally during the process.
- 4
Remove and discard the cinnamon stick (1) and the lemon peel. Use an immersion blender to process the sauce until it reaches your desired smoothness.
