Crispy Marinated Tofu
These savory baked tofu cubes offer a satisfyingly chewy texture and a crispy exterior without deep-frying. Marinated in a bold blend of sesame, five-spice, and soy sauce, this versatile plant protein pairs perfectly with rice, noodles, or fresh salads.
Instructions
- 1
Gently squeeze the defrosted extra-firm tofu (1 block) to remove water. Slice into 4 vertical slabs and press with a dry towel for 10 minutes.
- 2
In a small jar, combine soy sauce (2 tbsp), toasted sesame oil (2 tbsp), brown sugar (2.5 tbsp), rice vinegar (1.5 tbsp), chinese five spice powder (1 tsp), white pepper (0.5 tsp), garlic powder (0.5 tsp), ginger powder (0.25 tsp), and kosher salt (1 pinch). Shake well.
- 3
Cut the tofu into 0.75 inch cubes and place in a zip-top bag. Pour the marinade over the tofu, seal, and toss. Refrigerate for 30 minutes to 4 hours.
- 4
Preheat oven to 425F (218C). Add arrowroot powder (1 tbsp) to the tofu bag and massage gently to coat every cube.
- 5
Spread tofu in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake for 15 minutes.
- 6
Flip the cubes and rotate the pan. Bake for another 10 to 13 minutes until nicely browned.
- 7
Let the tofu rest for 5 minutes on the pan to allow the exterior to crisp up before serving.
