Handmade Flour Tortillas
These homemade flour tortillas are inspired by childhood memories and are easy to make from scratch without a tortilla press. Perfect for your favorite Mexican recipes, wraps, or breakfast burritos, they can be enjoyed in just 30 minutes.
Instructions
- 1
In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour (2.5 cups) and earth balance vegan butter (0.33 cup), massaging with your hands until all butter clumps are broken up. When well-combined, mix in the baking powder (0.5 teaspoon).
- 2
Dissolve the salt (1 teaspoon) in hot water (1 cup). Pour 0.66 of the [hot water] into the flour mixture and mix with your hands. Add the remaining water if there are still loose flour particles; a smooth, non-sticky dough is desired.
- 3
Divide the [dough] into 10 equal-sized balls, cover them with a damp warm towel, and let them rest for 30 minutes.
- 4
After the [dough] has rested, roll out each [dough] ball on a lightly floured surface using a rolling pin until a round tortilla forms. Re-flour the work surface as needed to prevent sticking.
- 5
Heat an un-greased nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place a single rolled [tortilla dough] directly on the skillet. Cook for about 45 seconds, or until [tortilla dough] develops air bubbles and brown spots on the bottom. Flip and cook for an additional 45 seconds on the second side, or until fully cooked through.
- 6
Once [tortillas] are finished, stack them on a plate covered with a towel to keep warm. Repeat the process until all remaining [tortillas] are cooked.
